You cannot change without life
Being a Christian is not just “Oh! I have changed my name, I am no longer Aduke. I am now Agnes.” Or “I am no longer Bamijoko, I am now Samuel.” Paul says in Galatians 4:19,
“My little children of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you”
A man receives a life when he becomes a Christian. You know the children have taught me a lot of deep scriptures through their songs. One of the songs children sing in Sunday school;
“Into my heart, into my heart,
Come into my heart, LORD Jesus
Come in today, come in to stay
Come into my life, LORD Jesus”
This is what takes place. He says my little children of whom I travail, I pray, I fast, until Christ be formed in you. When a man becomes a Christian, he receives a light. In Ephesians, Paul calls it the new man. In 2 Corinthians 5:17, he calls it a new creature. It’s a new creation man. There is a life and that life forms the basis, the source, the power, the energy of genuine transformation. John says as many as received him to them he gave POWER to become the sons of God (John 1:12). That’s the origin. It is not just about determination. It’s not about resolutions. There is a life I must receive.
Let me illustrate with three chairs. I want to remember what I said about the anatomy of man. Man is composed of spirit, soul and body. We can liken born again, for most people, to a two bedroom apartment that has two rooms and a sitting room. One room is the spirit man. The newly created man, the life of God resides there. The other room is the outer man – your body. The sitting room is likened to your mind. So the spirit lives in one room, the flesh or the old man lives in the other room and the mind is in the sitting room. When a visitor comes and knocks and says “Excuse!! Who is in this house?” If Mr. spirit, the new creation man, in you comes to the sitting room to interact with the visitor, you will look like an angel. He will understand and ask, “Is this not Esther? Something has happened. I can’t believe my eyes, Esther has changed!” Because at that point, your spirit man, the new creation man in Esther is interacting with the visitor. But at another time, somebody comes and says “Excuse!! Who is in this house?” If the old man has not been locked up completely and is still active, he will jump to the sitting room and say “Welcome”. Sister Esther will then show the traits of old Esther who is not a Christian. She will do everything just like every other normal person who is not born again.
So many Christians have this dual nature. On Sunday like this, they are like angels. When you see her in Church and she sings, some brothers will begin to receive vision and say she is the one, hallelujah! I remember some years ago I was preaching somewhere and was preaching from Hebrews 12 and said you need to be married to Patience if you want to run the Christian race to the end, one brother jumped up and said sister Patience, did you hear that, the pastor has confirmed it! Praise God. So many Christians exhibit a dual nature. At some point you are the best human being on earth. At other times people say, I don’t think this man is born again and wonder “How can a Christian do this?” That is why a lot of people live a zigzag Christian life. Today they are on the mountain top with God, tomorrow they are like the devil himself. Jesus said “Peter, flesh and blood has not revealed this to you” and five minutes later he said to the same Peter, “Get thee behind me Satan” – the same person!
Some of you know that when the spirit man is at the driver’s seat, you love God, you want to read your Bible, you want to move close to God, you want to attend Church. When the old man is however on the driver’s seat, when you are coming to the house, the children take cover and say this lion is coming again. The LORD will help us in Jesus name.
So the centre of a man, where the control is that tells whether you are transformed or not, where the ‘visitor’ will contact your life, is through what happens in your mind. But then, there is another dimension. You need to know what to do. The flesh and the spirit the Bible says they are always at war. So what must you do? You need to know how to make the spirit strong. Build up the spirit man, let him have strength. Eliminate the old man, get him out. If you do not know how to get him out completely, at the least weaken him such that he can never win a fight against your spirit – if you know what to do.
There is one more matter before I go to the concluding part of this message. The flesh is not only old, it is dirty and sinful. You can see the works of the flesh well-articulated by Paul in Galatians 5. But let me ask you, suppose I sit on a chair and then there is rain and I get soaked. If I stand up and go to a different chair, what will happen to the new chair? If I had a stained dress on, what will happen to the new chair? It will be stained. The same way every interaction of the old man with your mind leaves a stain behind. So that even when the old man has gone, there is the stain he leaves behind. Hence, what must you do to the chair? It must be cleaned up. That is where we will conclude this message. The Bible talks about renew your mind. To clean up the wrong ideas the flesh left behind.
