Renew your mind
In conclusion, let us go back to Romans 12:2.
And be not conformed to this world to this world but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind…
You must wash your mind. You must clean your mind. How do we renew our minds? We use the word of God. You have got to purge from your mind old ideas, wrong concepts of life and living which the old man has programmed and left behind in your mind. I imagine as we are seated now a little rat just jump to your feet. Some people will run away. Why? Because there is a wrong concept in your mind! When your mind is renewed, you will say, “you are a little rat, I will not run away from you.” I imagine if there is somebody who has only fifty naira left in his pocket at the Sunday service and doesn’t know how he is going to eat lunch or how is going to get transport to the office Monday morning. If you have not known how to renew your mind all the sermon you have been listening to will not enter your ears. All you will be thinking is but how will I have lunch? How will I get to the office tomorrow? But if your mind is renewed, you will say “But my God will supply all my needs according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” When its offering time, if your mind is not renewed, you will say “I can’t drop this fifty naira, am I going to trek home”? But if your mind is renewed you will say “The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want”.
So when the mind is renewed, the attitude will change. If you are a man and you have little money left in your pocket and your wife says “Honey, the soup has finished and I have to go to the market”. If the mind is not renewed, he will ask roughly “are we drinking soup in this house? So what happened to the soup of two days ago, have we finished it, do you think I am a money making machine?” He is going to talk the way an unbeliever will talk. Though he is born again, though his spirit is already accepted and transformed by God’s work yet his mind is not renewed. We need to renew our minds through God’s word. The word of God is the principle agent of transformation. We must read it, study it, memorize it, meditate upon it, believe it and we must practice it.
Let’s conclude by reading two verses of scripture just to show that the word of God is the transforming agent.
But we all with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the LORD are changed into the same image from glory to glory even as by the Spirit of the LORD. (II Corinthians 3:18)
“We behold in a glass”, that glass, that mirror, is God’s word. When you look at the mirror what does it do? The picture you see in the mirror is you. The mirror will not reflect somebody else’s picture. It shows you the errors in your life. It shows you where you need to adjust. Just like when you have made your headgear, when you go to the mirror, it tells you it is not pointed enough, do it again or that the angle is too low, make it higher. God’s word is a mirror. As we stand before the mirror of his word we are changed. If you neglect the word of God, you will remain unchanged. In John 8:31-32, Jesus says “if you continue in my word, then are you my disciples in deed and you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free”.
The second passage we will read is II Timothy 3:15-17 just showing that the word of God is the transforming agent.
And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise into salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works. (II Timothy 3:15-17)
How is your attitude towards the word of God? How is your word study? Do you have a complete Bible? Some people have the only the New Testament and Psalms. They come to church with only New Testament and Psalms and I ask them when you walk into church, how many legs did you use to walk into Church? Two testaments make one Bible. Have a complete Bible. Read it intelligently. Do not do “abracadabra” with Bible. You know some people say Jesus where you want me to read today let it be the place my eyes first go to now in Jesus name and if their eyes go unto a verse that says “woe unto you”, they say no, no, no. This is foolishness. Joshua 1:8 says “this book of the law shall not depart from your mouth; you will meditate upon it day and night”. Do you study the word? Do you meditate on the word of God? Do you act on it? Do you practice it? This is God’s instrument for changing and transforming your life. But remember you must first of all have the life.
If you are reading this and you believe in Jesus but you know you do not have the nature yet, this is where to start from. The life, that new creation man must be formed in you. I want to ask you today to sing the children song with me and make it a personal prayer – saying Jesus come into my life, come and live there. Come and impart your strength in me, the power to be a true child of God, come and give it to me. The LORD will do it. Are you reading this and really you know you live a zigzag Christian life, you are up and down? We are going to pray this morning and ask the LORD to help our lives. Let us rise up to pray.
