Dear Asake,

Beware of subtle deceptions that come in the name of self-motivation and development. I speak of motivations that swell your mind but impoverish your spirit. I speak of sweet tales of self-sufficiency that seem to locate you outside of Jesus Christ. You died. There is no self to soothe but a God to please. There is no ego to massage but a kingdom to serve. The scripture has always been clear about this. You CAN because Christ strengthens you. You dream because Christ in you is your hope of glory.

You live because Christ, ‘who is our life’, works in you ‘both to will and to do of his good pleasure.’ This goes beyond a moral thought. It’s a kingdom life. It’s a life that must permeate your daily realities. It’s a life that must engage your society. It’s a life that must shine to be part of the change we desire in Nigeria.

And frankly, that can no longer wait. We cannot keep silent in the face of aching injustice. We cannot keep silent when the voice of unrighteousness is louder than that of righteousness. We cannot keep silent when truth has been subverted and lies reign as norms. We cannot keep silent when the sacred respect for the sanctity of life and sexuality has been pushed to the boundaries of religious fundamentalism and secularism. We cannot keep silent when those who should spearhead the cause of the gospel have ‘robbed the truth and…think that godliness is a means to financial gain.’

We cannot keep silent when holiness has become a pious concealment of laziness and putrid dirtiness. However if we must speak, let our narratives not be as those who have not lifted the voice of sanity beyond savouring tales of tolerance while their hearts steep deep into compromise. The spiritual man who judges is humbled by the apt awareness that even ‘himself is judged of no man.’ This is not the time to be shy. This is not the time to make faith a solely closet affair.

Bring Jesus into the centre of your daily transactions and interactions. Be bold. Be clear. Your life isn’t just about a refined mind. It’s equally about a conquered spirit. There is nothing shameful about such testimony. Christlikeness is a fine swag. Shine it!
