God loves You

Dear Asake,

Last night when my house was asleep and my neighbourhood quiet, I strolled round the house compound pouring my heart to God. I wanted more. I wanted an experience to validate my convictions about Him. Something to make the whole Christian walk more real than it has been. But I didn’t know what exactly.

Maybe an open vision would do, a revelation of Jesus standing or seated in heaven that would make me, like Stephen, pray for my detractors rather than curse them.

Maybe my quiet desire was to hear a clear, loud, close voice behind me saying, ‘This is the way’. I couldn’t tell. But I couldn’t articulate what I wanted.

Then I slept. I woke up this morning to have my devotion and I read John 17. A verse jumped at me, ‘…and have loved them even as you have loved me.’ (vs 23) I froze. God loves me just as He loved Christ. So when Christ was born in the manger, grew up in a not so rich family, found himself in the midst of a raging storm, healed the sick, fed thousands, raised Lazarus, was betrayed, beaten, mocked, crucified, died, rose again…. God’s love was spelt over all over it, both the good and ugly experiences.

It sounded ridiculous and crazy. But God loved Him. I sighed. And then it struck. Nothing else should matter more, nothing else would be more real than His Word. I did not need anymore experience this morning than the ‘aliveness’ of the Word that is eternal. In whatever situation you might find yourself now, I hope you will find comfort in this lofty, eternal words from the lips of Jesus himself: God loves YOU.
